Environmentally-Friendly Living in New York City

December 28, 2009 - 7:48 pm No Comments

Environmentally-friendly living has swept across America, Europe and other parts of the world. But it often comes at a price. Chemical-free cleaners, compact fluorescent light bulbs and hybrid cars are more costly than their more common equivalents, which means not everyone can afford to be a steward of the environment, even if he or she would like to be. One community group is hoping to change that by bringing eco-friendly housing to one low-come neighborhood of New York. Paige Kollock reports.

Is the Earth a living organic being or just a bunch of dirt? Will it die? How?

December 28, 2009 - 7:48 pm 4 Comments

I’m just curious whether or not others feel like I do. I wholeheartedly believe that the earth is a living being that like everything else will eventually die just like other planets have. She might even just shake us off like a dog shakes off water after a bath if we irritate her too much (pollution). We are sooooo small in the scheme of things yet sooooo arrogant…

The earth is, mostly, a ball of molten iron hanging in space.

Life only inhabits a tiny portion of the earth: the skin on an apple is thicker than the earth’s crust, relative to the diameter – and organisms only live *on top* of that crust.

Eventually the earth will “die” when the sun dies and expands – boiling-off the earth’s atmosphere and water.

The interdependence of organisms in the biosphere means that by altering the levels of different substances in and on the earth, humans are playing havok with the balance. But I seriously doubt that humans could ever wipe out all life on earth – even if we really tried (which we aren’t: we’re only doing it by accident). Bacteria and simple organisms will always survive, but we might wipe out a lot of the larger organisms, including ourselves. The earth has both been a lot hotter and a lot colder at different points in the past, and life got on fine (albeit many species became extinct every time the climate changed dramatically)

Which country is the most healthiest to live in in terms of being environmentally friendly?

December 28, 2009 - 7:47 pm 24 Comments

I am considering moving to a different country, however i want to live somewhere that is environmentally friendly and in a country that uses renewable energy resources, i want a healthy lifestyle also.

Well if you mean environment friendly just by the objects of nature, I understand Swiss is the best place to live. Great mountains, fresh air, lakes, rivers, jungles and on the top you will have great sources of communication system which in most of the case is environment friendly. Being a welfare state you have other benefits as well… so I will recommend you Switzerland.

Where do I find valuable information about green living and a healthy diet?

December 28, 2009 - 7:47 pm 2 Comments

There is a lot of talk about green living, organic and raw foods, but most info is so basic that everyone just keeps repeating the stuff already known. Can anyone suggest a place with more advanced and very specific articles stating the facts with references back to the primary sources?

Fishing out the info from internet takes special search skills, try very specific keywords, use quotes, etc. Also http://organicwise.org has many articles with each of them linking back to the original source. It appears new articles appear weekly.

August 15, 2009 - 9:07 pm No Comments

eco-friendly-bathroomHere is a great video about several ways to make your bathroom eco-friendly.

Some of the suggestions include using greener bathroom products that protect both you and the environment such as:

Toilet paper and facial tissue that is chlorine free and made from a high percentage of post-consumer recycled paper.

Personal care products that are organic and don’t contain harmful chemicals referred to as the Dirty Dozen.

Pesticide-free Organic Cotton Towels or even ones made from Bamboo.

A PVC-free shower curtain or a mildew resistant Hemp curtain.

Beeswax or vegetable oil based candles for freshening the air naturally.

These simple tips are easy to do and can make a big difference.

Eco Living is Good for Us and Our Environment

August 13, 2009 - 8:19 pm No Comments
Green_livingToday more than ever people are interested in Eco Living.  There is a growing awareness that our home, the earth, is to be respected and cared for by her human inhabitants.  People everywhere are looking for better ways to live that will protect our environment.  More and more people want to make sure that they are being good stewards and want to leave the earth a little better place to live than they found it.

There are some main themes that we can all remember that will help to make this happen.  We can use less non-renewable sources of energy and look for better ways to meet our energy needs.  Next we want to ensure that everyone has clean drinking water and that we don’t waste this life giving resource.  We can cut down on waste and help reduce the toxic load on our environment by choosing non-polluting alternatives to chemicals and substances that we use in our daily lives.

There are little things we can do every day that can positively impact on our environment.  From turning the lights off when you leave a room to not letting the water run while you are brushing your teeth, all these things add up.  You can help reduce the amount of trash that goes into landfills by making sure you recycle and reuse or donate items that can still be useful.  You can also protect the environment in your homes as well the rest of the planet by using eco-friendly cleaning supplies.

You can also protect your own body by making better food choices to include more organic produce in your diet and be sure to use a reuseable bag when shopping to cut down on waste from plastic bags.  Living green is good for you and your environment.

Most of the changes you make can also make a positive difference in your bank account as well.  Many environment saving efforts also help you save money too.  Natural products can be healthier and less expensive if not always in the short term, definitely in the long run.

When we eliminate waste, save energy and make healthier choices for our bodies, homes and planet we are sure to create a better world for those we share the earth with and those who come after us.  This is the essence of eco living.
