Care to share some renewable energy green living tips?

January 20, 2010 - 8:07 am No Comments

Just looking for some general tips on living greener, things such as solar panels, etc, that won’t cost a lot to implement? Of course, solar panels cost a fortune, but it’s an example. Thanks!

Hey Jenny,

I actually just responded to another question of yours too a few minutes ago. I’ve been reviewing "green" manuals lately and found something called "Earth4Energy" – It’s a great guide with detailed information on how to build your own solar and wind power. You can check out my full review of it @ http://renewable-energy-info.com/ – Best of luck to ya!

How Do I dispose off my old computer in an eco- friendly manner?

January 20, 2010 - 8:07 am No Comments

I live in Montgomery County, MD. I have a couple of working old computers 2GB hard drive, 256 MD RAM etc (obselete now), and bulky monitors. I don’t think anybody would be interested in them anymore and I feel that I cannot donate them. How do I dispose them off in an eco friendly manner (without harming the environment)?

You can donate it to non-profits, a friend, or other places.

You can also call the company that created the computer and see if they offer re-collection of old systems (if it’s a Compaq, that’s HP now; Packard-Bell is HP; eMachines is also Gateway).

Since you can’t get rid of it in a landfill because its components have lead and mercury, call your city administration building (city hall or 311 in most areas) to ask them if the city or county offers electronics recycling programs.

how will we benefit from living in a greener, eco-friendly society?

January 20, 2010 - 8:07 am No Comments

We will be be more caring about how we treat the earth we live on, instead of destroying it.. And when you destroy the place that sustains your life you’re just pressing the "self-destruct" button.

Help! Buying organic and living GREEN!?

January 18, 2010 - 3:50 pm No Comments

Hey all I am a poor college student looking for tips on living more green. I try to buy organic as much as I can but it is difficult with a limited amount of money. Anybody have any suggestions/good finds? Also, any tips on living green?

-Grow your own
-shop at farmer’s markets (Google "Certified Farmers market" + "your town"
- Tofu – it can be dressed in 1000′s of different recipes and cost about $1.50 per package. A package lasts my 2 person house 3 meals or so.
- Fruits and veggies are typically cheaper than processed packaged foods
- meat substitute foods for treats only, they’re good but pricey
-shop in the dry bulk bins (about 60% savings!)
- buy seasonally
-buy based on good prices and work meals around what’s available rather than forcing yourself to buy around a meal plan
-compromise when needed, RTSB free milk may be cheaper than organic. Won’t be as good, but still better than regular
-Depending on your area, shop at alternating stores. Some items are cheaper in some stores than others.
-Some stores have organic generic brands
-avoid fast food and cook for yourself more often

Living green tip – assess your lifestyle and for the next day, week, or year ask yourself where you can reduce, reuse, or recycle.

Are there any environmentally friendly carpets out there?

January 18, 2010 - 3:50 pm No Comments

Need to replace my stinky living room carpet, ruined by pet urine, tried cleaning it and nothing works. Has anyone tried an environmentally friendly carpet? Hardwood floor leads up to the carpet, so I can’t go with bamboo or anything because it’d look weird to have two different woods in the same area. The room is probably 8′x16′.

Gravel, soil, or natural sod would be your best bet.

I need to interview someone for a research paper on green living?

January 18, 2010 - 3:50 pm No Comments

I need to do an email interview with someone who is an expert in green living.

Where should I start? Do any universities have professors that are experts in green living?

Any ideas would be helpful!

*Thanks!*

Lots of universities have experts on environmental issues. Look for physical geographers, earth systems science people, or environmental scientists.

or, if there is an environmental activism group in your area contact them. (i.e. a watershed association, park cleanup group, etc).

The city might also have someone you could contact that promotes environmental issues.
