are fluorescent tubes environmentally friendly, or is there a better way of lighting your home?

October 15, 2010 - 9:29 pm 2 Comments

We live in a basement flat and have to have the lights on all the time as we have no windows at all, we have tubes is the is the most environmentally friendly way to light our home??

Fluorescent lighting is environmentally friendly — for the same amount of light produced they use up to 75% less electricity than incandescent lighting. Electricity ultimately comes from the power plants burning fossil fuels and releasing greenhouse gases, so saving electricity also reduces greenhouse emissions.

On the flip side, fluorescent lighting contains a small amount of mercury, and we definitely don’t want any more mercury getting into the soil and oceans. While homeowners are allowed to throw away fluorescent tubes/lights in the trash, a better option is to dispose of them at a local recycling center so that the mercury can be contained.

In addition, the ballasts used in the fluorescent tube lights used to contain PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), which are carcinogens and environmental poisons. New ballasts don’t use PCBs but it’s important to dispose of old fluorescent lighting fixtures safely if they do.

Is there a website or two where I can find lists of earth friendly companies that produce everyday products?

May 5, 2010 - 6:30 pm No Comments

I’m trying my best (step by step) to live as environmentally friendly as possible. I’m wondering what the great companies are out there (mind you, i live in po-dunk nowhere currently, so i don’t have access to much), and also what the bad ones are that i should avoid. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Here are a couple websites that may be helpful

betterworldshopper.com

Where are the environmentally conscious areas of egypt and other thoughts on the topic of environmentalism?

March 30, 2010 - 6:30 pm No Comments

Is there a section of egypt that’s effectively implementing environmentally friendly ways of living (i.e., recycling, people not littering often, high trash can availability in outdoor market areas, etc., etc)? Yes, yes, many are hospitable and friendly, but after being used to living in green places like the california bay area, and germany, I was shocked to see that the basics of environmental care were ignored out of the costly hotel areas. Out of the touristy areas people threw all sorts of trash on the street, I didn’t notice any garbage cans (was told that people would probably steal them), trash piled high, goats and other livestock eating in refuse…that wasn’t uncommon from my trips to various cities in alexandria and cairo. One city, kafr-el-dawr, just recently got constant garbage pick up–is that a common problem for the "commoners" of egypt that aren’t born into a "better" life? also, what are the cancer rates since it seems there’s a lack of environmental control?

Environmentally consciousness are not distributed by areas, its distributed individually, however, there is a small city called Qena who implement environmental system recently and its working fine and the people there are happy with the outcome.
The environmental laws came into effect very recently (2000) in comparison to other countries (60′s and 70′s) so the environmental authorities are taking things by priorities.
Industry wastes comes first, clearly because they produce more than any other sources and they are doing ok in that matter (in my opinion).
Concerning domestic waste, there are two big contractors hired to do the domestic wastes (from producer to recycling or landfill) in Cairo and Alex.
Still there are some persistent problems in which their solution is dependent on other problems such as;
-Traffic emissions
-Old or existing factories (most likely doesnt implement environmental measures in the process, have too many employees, sometimes authorities prefer to "let" them do what they do because the alternative is not a good idea (Shutting it down lead to lots of employees lose their sole income)
- Corruption.
- environmental and health "un-awareness" of the majority.
etc..

and unfortunately yes, we do have some VERY high cancer rates among the people, especially the poor.
such as and not limited to; Liver, lungs, blood, kidneys, breast, prostate.

Environmentally friendly wedding – please give me some ideas!?

March 20, 2010 - 8:19 pm No Comments

My fiance and I are very environmentally conscious and would like our wedding to reflect our "green" attitudes! We are planning on using either tree-free or recycled paper for all invitations, menus, etc. We plan on using soy candles and we would like our centerpieces to be living green plants. Are they are other suggestions you may have for how to incorporate the "going green" movement into our wedding?

Find a caterer who uses local in season organic produce and meats. Choose organic or biodynamic wines. There are organic florists, or you can choose living plants instead of cut flowers for arrangements. Depending on the guest list electronic rsvp’s instead of a separate paper, envelope and mailing will help. Buy or rent a vintage gown. RENT brides maids dresses, these dresses are never worn again, or pick a color and allow your brides maids to choose a dress they will wear again. Rent linens instead of paper napkins. Don’t get caught up in all the marketing that surrounds weddings, thing about your favors, where will they ultimately wind up. Most go to landfill, all those yards of printed ribbon and tulle are just tossed away.

I’ve seen on the tv listing shows about eco friendly weddings, I have no doubt there are many books on the subject, but your best bet is to find a wedding planner who specializes in green weddings, they will know all the local vendors and can save you money and time.
