Can one make a good living by organic farming?

January 17, 2010 - 2:31 pm No Comments

Your question is far too broad for a really specific. It’s like me asking you where in the ocean I can find a shark. It depends…

First, what do you consider a good living? Second, where would you farm and what type of farm? Fruits, vegetables, livestock, dairy, grains? Next what type of business structure- direct market or commercial/wholesale? What is your experience level-is this a new venture or do you have a lot of experience in agriculture?

Yes, you can make a good living being an organic farmer. But you can also fail miserably. Like any business in agriculture or any other industry, you must have a business plan and a good bit of knowledge and experience of what you are doing to succeed.

Living only on raw organic blended fruits, vegetables & nuts smoothies?

January 14, 2010 - 7:56 pm No Comments

I am wondering if anybody of you know somebody that lives only by drinking raw fruits, vegetables & nuts smoothies. Not eating anything else. Not cooked food, not junk food. Just blended liquid fruit, vegetables & nuts ( pulp and SKIN… blended into a powerful 1300 – 1500 watts blender ) all liquified ready to drink ?

It makes a lot of sense to me for different reasons and I am thinking of doing that. But I wanted to know if any of you know, or have known anybody that did that for an extended period of time and what the results where ?

Thanks

I’ve known a few people who have followed this diet and they weren’t healthy. They usually went back to their old ways(which wasn’t necessarily bad) since even a very dedicated person can get sick of drinking fruit/nut smoothies every day. While raw food diets may make good cleansing or weight loss diets, I don’t think they make good long-term diets. A 100% raw vegan diet is just too extreme. I think 75% raw is more reasonable although you may have some problems if you don’t plan things right, but in both cases you have to take supplements.

The only people capable of being healthy 100% raw vegans are people who run health resorts that specialize in raw foodism, and even then these people are often not ideally healthy. If they work at a raw food health resort, they have immediate access to a lot of fresh produce and raw foods all day and every day like sprouts, smoothies, fermented foods, raw soups, dehydrated foods, and juices. Some large health-food stores that prepare much of their own food may also afford some of their staff the opportunity to live mostly raw as well. In the "real world", outside of a health resort, most people don’t have the time to prepare a wide variety of raw foods every day. Most people don’t even have time to cook every day either. Eating large amounts of fruits and nuts has a laxative effect. A diet consisting mostly of raw, fleshy fruits is a diet that relies largely on simple sugars, and is likely to be short of protein(almost unheard of in the developed world). This can do enormous damage to your teeth as well as to your health. I’ve even heard stories of some extreme fruitarians losing many of their teeth, although I haven’t met any personally.

I’ve experimented with raw-foodism for nearly 6 months and while I felt better at first, I was likely deficient in a number of nutrients after a few weeks. I wouldn’t advice it except as a short-term cleansing or weight-loss diet, and would suggest talking with your doctor before trying out any "extreme" diets(I think the standard American diet is pretty extreme as well). I’m satisfied with being a ovo-vegetarian who eats a 75% cooked food diet.

Is there evidence that people who eat organic live significantly longer ?

January 8, 2010 - 9:03 am 2 Comments

Is there evidence that people who eat organic , exercise a lot and meditate ( or whatever ) live significantly longer than people who dont ?

I know that exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, can make a big impact on your health, and both prolong your life and improve its quality. I’m not sure about meditation. I don’t believe in any mystical effects of meditation, but if it helps you relax and de-stress, then it can’t hurt.

I’m not sure if organic foods are significantly healthier than commercially grown ones, though. I do know that they taste better, and organic farming is more sustainable and better for the environment. Putting an "Organic" label on something doesn’t automatically make it nutritious. Wheat grass juice, for example, can be completely organic, yet despite many of its claims, has almost no nutritional or health value.

I think a lot of the benefit from organic foods comes more from lifestyle changes than from the food itself. In other words, people who make an effort to eat organic foods are generally more nutrition-conscious. In other words, replacing a diet of fast food and microwave meals with organically grown meals can provide a huge health benefit, but replacing a healthy diet of commercially-grown food with organic food wouldn’t provide a significant benefit.

My girlfriend and I recently purchased a crop share at a local farm. Even if the veggies themselves aren’t much *healthier* than store-bought ones, they taste sooo much better, and it has inspired us to cook more of our own food, rather than eat microwavable dinners (more of an indirect health benefit).

Are organic cotton sheets necessary for living without chemicals in my sheets.?

January 6, 2010 - 8:33 am 4 Comments

I am reading the book Green Chic. The author talks about a number of chemicals used to treat sheets prior to packaging. She recommends using organic sheets only. She swears you can’t wash the chemicals out of the sheets.

I hate being sold fear. And I don’t have the money to go change all my sheets over to organic (or listen to most of the advice she gives).

Do you think organic cotton is safer? Is there a way to wash traditional cotton sheets to get the chemicals out?

organic cotton is safer but the chemicals do eventually wash out/off gas so if you have sheets that are several years old they are probably free of chemicals by now. What you should plan on doing is replacing your sheets slowly with organic cotton sheets over time and hit sales to do so.

Are people into organic living in San Juan , PR?

January 1, 2010 - 8:02 pm 5 Comments

Will I be able to purchase organic food for my kids there? Find them at the resort?
Are there health food stores in San Juan?

in our culture pork is a must in the main menu, we do eat unhealthy fatty foods, but for instance not everyone is the same (my mom and son are veggie persons) they eat no meat and dairy products at all, so they eat organic food. I recommend you go to supermarkets such as Amigo, Pueblo, or Walmart and there is a section of organic foods. You wont find organic foods around in hotels or resturants that have organic foods. there are naturalist supermarkets (only a few), I live in bayamon and in the main route 167, you will find a few of these natural organic little shops. if you ask store locals they will help you.
