How Do I dispose off my old computer in an eco- friendly manner?
I live in Montgomery County, MD. I have a couple of working old computers 2GB hard drive, 256 MD RAM etc (obselete now), and bulky monitors. I don’t think anybody would be interested in them anymore and I feel that I cannot donate them. How do I dispose them off in an eco friendly manner (without harming the environment)?
You can donate it to non-profits, a friend, or other places.
You can also call the company that created the computer and see if they offer re-collection of old systems (if it’s a Compaq, that’s HP now; Packard-Bell is HP; eMachines is also Gateway).
Since you can’t get rid of it in a landfill because its components have lead and mercury, call your city administration building (city hall or 311 in most areas) to ask them if the city or county offers electronics recycling programs.

offer it to a school or some kind of charity; I am sure they would be happy to take it as a donation

Donate them to your local donation center, they love getting used computers and so do the people who pick them up. I work at a comp company and I just donated about 16 old computers to Savers here in AZ.

I believe big computer companies offer to take back the old system and dispose of them. http://www.dell.com is one company. They took my old computer and took care of it for me.

Find a recycling place in your area. You will probably have to pay a small fee to get rid of the stuff though.

well, you could sell them at a pawn shop.
or you could find somebody who collects them (best way is through ebay, some people collect those old computers)
or you could take them to a place like staples, they have these bins specially for electronics and thinsg like that. maybe one for computers, im not sure. (staples is an office supply store in case you didnt know)

We have a place near us where you can dispose of old TVs, batteries, computers, any hazardous waste that you cannot take to a dump or landfill, look around, there should be one near you, too.

Donate them. There are many uses for older computers. Just make sure your hard drives contain nothing you don’t want in the public.
Do a search for donating old computers. There are lots of ways to donate them. Just think of a child who may never get a computer if you just toss them.

Delete the hard drives and give them to your computer outlet store for disposal. They will recycle what can be used from them then melt down the printed circuit boards for the gold in them and recycle the IC circuits.

If no one wants them take it your local transfer station or county or city dump. they should have recycling facilities there for tv’s and old computers.
Check the yellow pages also.

Many communities have collection days for unwanted electronics which are then taken apart and parts recycled or disposed of properly. For your community, maybe a call to the public works or city hall would connect you with a drop off day or place. The garbage collection company might be able to tell you.
NOTE: about donation. Really old computers and equipment is NOT wanted by any charitable agency. I work for one and all that junk electronics just creates a problem because now we have to dispose of them. Things that are a few years out of date are usually welcome.

Too late on not harming the enviornment. By donating them – someone ELSE has to worry about this.
Just throw them in the trash. Not that big a deal.
